Tooth Replacement Options in Caldwell, West Caldwell NJ, and Florham Park
Our surgeons, Drs. Michael H. Kirsch, Benjamin Jacobs and Adam Schuessler have placed thousands of dental implants. Their expertise and experience are changing the way people live. Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement crown that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Imagine getting back the ability to eat as you did before tooth loss and knowing that your gums and that facial contours will be preserved. That is why our dental implant patients smile with confidence.
What Are Dental Implants?
The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that act as tooth root substitutes and are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. After the bone bonds strongly with the implant, small posts are placed that protrude through the gums and attached to the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that would otherwise occur when teeth are not replaced.

The Surgical Procedure
At the consult appointment, Dr. Kirsch, Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Schuessler will explain the procedure in detail so you will know what to expect before your appointment. You will also be given a prescription for an antibiotic to begin taking an hour before your appointment. Once in the office, you will be brought into the treatment room and comfortably seated. For most patients, the placement of dental a implant involves a single 30 minute procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia. It is common for patients to remark that the implant procedure is more pleasant than tooth cleaning visit. If reconstructive bone grafting is being performed with implant placement or at your request, you may choose to have Nitrous Oxide, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia in addition to the local anesthesia.
2. Tooth Loss
3. Healed Bone
4. Implant Placed
6. Implant Restored
Once the local anesthesia has taken effect your surgeon will check to make sure you are 100% comfortable. The implants are often placed directly through the gum tissue without incisions. A special drill is gently used to make 2mm opening into the jaw. Drs. Kirsch, Jacobs and Schuessler will gradually widen this hole to match the size of the planned implant. The implant is threaded through the gum into the bone and a radiograph will be obtained of the implant.
Your dentist can work with the surgeon and make you a temporary restoration to be worn during the healing period. So you never have to walk around without a tooth, our doctors will often place the temporary so that you will leave the office with an immediate tooth replacement.
Dental Implants, Bone Loss, & Alternative Treatments
We advise all our patients to take an over-the-counter pain medication before the local anesthesia has worn off and will prescribe a stronger pain medication just in case. However, it is rare that patients need the prescription pain medication if they follow the post-operative instructions. If you were just given local anesthesia, you may immediately resume all normal activities. Patients given IV anesthesia should rest at home for the remainder of the day.
For the first two to three months following surgery, the implants gradually bonding with the jawbone.
Most often the procedure is done as a single stage where only one surgical visit is necessary. In some cases the implant may be placed below the gum to allow for additional bone growth. In that case, a simple, painless procedure will be done to uncover the top of the implant once it has healed.
The NJ Center for Oral Surgery offers a single all-inclusive fee for the entire implant process. This fee may include the, surgical visit including the actual implant, all post-operative visits and post-operative radiographs, all parts and procedures that are required for your dentist to restore the implant.
There are no hidden costs or charges. The fee also includes yearly periodic follow-up exams and radiographs for the first five years after the implant has been placed. If you are healthy and have no dental diseases, you may also qualify for an integration guarantee. Please ask Drs. Kirsch, Jacobs and Schuessler for details.
What Types Of Prosthesis Are Available?
A single prosthesis (crown) is used to replace one missing tooth each prosthetic tooth attaches to its own implant. A partial prosthesis (fixed bridge) can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three implants. A complete dental prosthesis (fixed bridge) replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. The number of implants varies depending upon which type of complete prosthesis (removable or fixed) is recommended. A removable prosthesis (over denture) attaches to a bar or ball in socket attachments, whereas a fixed prosthesis is permanent and removable only by the dentist.
Our doctors perform in-office implant surgery in a operating suite, thus optimizing the level of sterility.
Why Dental Implants?
Once you learn about dental implants, you finally realize there is a way to improve you life. When you lose several teeth whether it’s a new situation or something you have lived with for years chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself.
Dental implants can be your doorway to renewed self-confidence and peace of mind.
A Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, developed this concept for oral rehabilitation more than 40 years ago. With his pioneering research, Dr. Branemark opened the door to a lifetime of renewed comfort and self-confidence for millions of individuals facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss.
Why Select Dental Implants Over More Traditional Types Of Restorations?
There are several reasons: Why sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge a space? In addition, removing a denture or a partial at night may be inconvenient, not to mention that dentures that slip can be uncomfortable and rather embarrassing.
Are You A Candidate For Implants?
If you are considering implants, your mouth must be examined thoroughly and your medical and dental history reviewed. If you mouth is not ideal for implants, ways of improving outcome, such as bone grafting, may be recommended.
What Type Of Anesthesia Is Used?
The majority of dental implants and bone graft can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, with or without general anesthesia.
Do Implants Need Special Care?
Once the implants are in place, they will serve you well for many years if you take care of them and keep your mouth healthy. This means taking the time for good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) and keeping regular appointments with your dentist and oral surgeon.
